Covid-19 - Important News

Thu 13 Aug 2020
Please read this important announcement from DOC especially re the road closures...

Given the Prime Ministers recent Covid-19 announcement that Auckland is moving to Alert Level 3 and the rest of the country to Alert Level 2 (AL2) as of midday Wednesday, 12 August we would like to alert you to some changes for the ski areas.

Changes that will affect the Ski Clubs and Transport concessionaires

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (RAL) under AL2 will be reducing their comfortable carrying capacity from 4,500 to 1,800 at Whakapapa and 3,700 to 1,000 at Turoa.  In order for RAL to manage these numbers and the restrictions imposed by the government under AL2, they will be operating their bookable carpark system, 7 days per week commencing 6.00 pm tonight.   Ski Clubs and Transport Operators wanting access to Iwikau must book a carpark and confirm passenger numbers and details.

Bruce Road Barrier

Starting tomorrow, Thursday 13 August, the Bruce Road barrier will be opened from 7.00 am and closed at 2.00 pm for bookable parking, and will remain closed overnight.   DOC and Police will be monitoring to ensure adherence to the COVID protocols under AL2 and this will mostly occur at the Bruce Road barrier. The road will remain restricted throughout AL2 but closed as per the current criteria on bad weather days.  Patrons will still be able to access the Bruce Road after 2pm (if there is capacity) as they currently would but everyone must book a park. There are no guarantees that there will be parks available as it will all be within the confines of the limited numbers under AL2.

You can go to NZTA’s journey website, to get the latest update on the status of Bruce Road.

Public Health Measures

All concessionaires must follow public health measures to a high standard including physical distancing of 2 metres, contact tracing and hygiene practices including face masks where appropriate.   Updated information is available on the COVID-19 government website.

Final message

We all have a responsibility to ensure we have robust safety plans, consistent with the governments requirements for AL2 to minimize the spread of COVID-19.   We appreciate your support.
