Waitawhata Hut - Lindeman Road - 16th/17th July
After a ten day winter storm the skies cleared just in time for a trip in the Kaimais. Pete led a weekend trip from the Wairongamai track to stay at the Waitawheta Hut and then to walk out on the Lindeman Track. Bruce and I went over on Sunday to walk the Lindeman Track and to pick up the overnight trampers. The weather was perfect with clear skies, and calm conditions. The view from the road end looking out to Matakana Island and Mt Maunganui was spectacular. We walked up the steep track (and it was steep!), as Pete had told us he was walking out that way rather than the lower loop track. The track was a good climb up which became rather boggy at the top. We met the overnighters at the top of the track and retraced our footsteps to return to the road end. The weary group were pleased to see us as they then knew they were near then end of the track, and it was down hill all the way. We also had a thermos of hot water for a cuppa in the car along with a batch of fresh blueberry muffins baked by Winston that morning. After a short rest to enjoy their well deserved cuppa and muffin, everyone piled into the cars and headed home.

The RTSC Adventurers – Lake Tarawera - wet and wild but exhilarating!
Unfortunately, all the weather predictions held true, and Saturday morning dawned (well spluttered into grey) rainy and miserable… It didn’t dampen our sprits though as we gathered on the shores of Lake Tarawera - 29 intrepid adventurers braving the elements. Click here for more..

Ruahines
The Ruahine’s isn’t an area we visit often so it was great to see a crew of 9 of us on this trip. We all managed to get away at various times from Rotorua for the long drive south and after leaving the rain behind at about Taupo we were on the sunnier climates further south. Click

An Historical Recount of the Hapuawhenua Viaduct
The stream, curling down out of the bush, was so named because in the pools hapu or pregnant women recuperated. Nowadays the old and the new viaducts straddle the stream. The original viaduct took 10 months and 5 days to build and was completed in 1907. There were three options as to where the link for the main trunk line should lay. Before that it was a coach road. Eventually (after 15 years?) the foothills of Ruapehu were chosen over the desert road or New Plymouth as the trains needed a gradual run-up. Click here for more...
